Thanks to an online co-operative that lets movie fans buy independent movie rights, TheMoviesClub, creates a new microfinance Movie co-operative that is managed online. For the price of a DVD, movie fans can now join a co-operative that will buy the rights to independent movies, taking Social commerce to a whole new level. Suddenly what to watch in the cinema won’t be just the latest blockbusters, but also a movie owned by the co-operative. Who says that a Hollywood studio mogul knows more than say 50,000 plus members of the public?
Members will be able to discuss and have an equal vote on movie selection, acquisition, marketing, promotion, and all key decisions on the running of the club.
Rather than having the same old movies imposed on the audience this innovative idea lets the public decide what they want. With the community having their say in selection and promotion the best ideas will bubble to the top increasing the likelihood of success, using the principle of Wisdom of the Crowds.
TheMoviesClub.com will acquire completed independent movies and enable our members to invest directly in those movies and share in their financial success. Movie distribution is traditionally an expensive business. With this model anyone can take part. And with a large inherent fan base, and with the low costs of the model then there is every chance for a success for each movie TheMoviesClub releases.

TheMoviesClub is a co-operative built on a unique community business model. It is an autonomous association of people united voluntarily to meet a common economic, social and cultural needs through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise, in simple terms, one member one vote.
So no one will have more power than any other member, and all key decisions will be taken by community vote. The running of TheMoviesClub will be fully transparent, and we also let members decide whether they take a share of the profits or re-invest in future movies.
TheMoviesClub is funded by its members as a microfinance initiative. Contributors become members of the TMC for £15. £13.50 goes towards purchasing a movie, releasing the movie, and other expenditure with the remaining 10% going towards administration of the website.
Once we have our founder joiners in place, TheMoviesClub will then acquire a movie only on the basis that the purchase provides a controlling stake (51%+) of the movie if not 100%. It will be interesting to see how TheMoviesClub develop as it will literally be movie fan powered. We hope to acquire our first movie in the summer, and will begin the planning process at Cannes Film Festival, with a launch at the Edinburgh International Film festival.

TheMoviesClub will be looking for this years Pan’s Labyrinth or Little Miss Sunshine, and bringing it to a cinema near you. There are many quality indie movies that are made each year, and either lack a buyer or do not receive sufficient funding to make them a success to the wider public. The site launched in April, with a free registration page for people to let us know they were interested in hearing more. Frequent site updates will follow during May, and a launch event will follow in Edinburgh International film festival as we open up to people joining with full membership.
